Hi! My name is Anastasia McAteer and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, and a Certified-IAYT Yoga Therapist. I love the work that I do because I enjoy helping adolescents, adults, couples, and families to understand themselves better. I believe that this understanding of oneself or of one’s relationship can help cultivate a deeper change and deeper connection within themselves or within their relationships.
When working with individuals, couples, and families, I aim to provide a safe, compassionate, and empathetic space because therapy can at times feel vulnerable which is powerful but can also be scary. For this reason, I utilize a client-centered approach with a systemic lens while organically integrating mind-body, neuroscience-informed, and attachment-based techniques.
Umm…that’s great, Anastasia, but what does that all mean? It means that I believe you know yourself best and I will not pretend to know more about you than you do—I will come from a place of curiosity to get to know all the parts of you, your relationship, and your family. I also understand that everyone is apart of a bigger system, whether that be their family, their relationships, their community, their culture, etc… Being able to see clients through this lens helps me gain greater insight of each person in the room. I do all of this while organically incorporating psycho-education, mind-body techniques, and upon request, breathing practices, and gentle body movement, to help create a stronger mind/body connection.
Now that I explained a little bit about my approach to therapy, here is a little bit more about me. I moved to Austin from Boston about 10 years ago because the cold and I do not get along. I graduated with honors from St. Edward’s University with a dual Masters degree in Individual and Marriage and Family Counseling after completing a Bachelors in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming. I have worked at the Austin Children’s Shelter (now SAFE Alliance) in their Transitional Living Program, at CARE working with those who have an HIV+ diagnosis, and at an Intensive Outpatient Program for those in substance use recovery. I am currently running a therapeutic yoga group for adolescent females with high stress and/or anxiety. And like many Austinites, I have two dogs that I absolutely adore.
I look forward to connecting with you if you feel like I am the right person for you, your relationship, or your family.
